Northern Red Oak

Hiking at the edge of the woods I saw this dominate stem. I went into the woods to investigate.

 I measured the diameter as 8' 3 1/16"

The tree height will have to come later. It had grown as tall as trees uphill from it.

Northern Red Oak

Here is the largest Northern Red oak I have measured. In measuring I broke my tape so the circumference was not measured. I just measured the diameter. Some day I will come back and check the circumference. I was wondering how I was going to get the tape around the tree. If you look at the base the tree is on a fairly seep hill. So by breaking the tape I never found out how I was going to measure the circumference. I had that tape for 7 years, and it was not that expensive.

I knitted 2 photos together to get this one. I am not experienced at this but I guess it came out OK. My daughter gave me some help!

Height 111'
Canopy 66' and 56'
Diameter 47"
Points 273.7

Red Oak

Here is a Red oak in the photo above it is to the left of the tree on the far right. I call it a Red oak not knowing exactly what species it is. The 2 red oaks I run across in woods in west central Missouri are Northern red oak and Shumard oak.

I measured this tree:
height 89'
circumference of 99"
Canopy of 62'
Total points 204

Here is a close up of the tight bark characteristic of red oaks. They are healthy trees, growing to dominate the forest.

Isaiah 66:1,2

"Thus says the LORD,
'Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool
Where then is a house you could build for Me?
And where is a place that I may rest?

For My hand made all these things,
Thus all these things came into being," declares the LORD
But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word.' "
