Beaver Activity found in A New Area for Me

This tree was cut down by beaver but why didn't they not eat or use the branches?

Maple Seeds Developing

Red Bud Trees are Blooming

Osage Orange

Here is an unusual Osage orange tree with some branches

Here is an Osage orange with some branches growing along the ground.

Chinquapin Oak

Here is a Chinquapin oak with an unusual branch that harbors a bush growing out of it.



There is a predominance of Chinquapin oak leaves below the tree that gives me the confidence to call it that.

The tree I am referring to is in the center of the photo, bracketed by a thick stand of trees on the left and the right.

This tree is used to guide me in this part of the woods.

Here is one of the advantages of hiking on a trail. They cut out fallen trees.

ID'ed by the 2 black breast bands. The bird has a distinctive call killdeer or killdee.

Blistery Early Hike / Eastern Meadowlark

This is an Eastern Meadowlark. The only way I can tell the difference between the two is by their song. The eastern has a 3 note call. The western has a 7-10 note call. Below is a video with sound showing this bird as an Eastern Meadowlark. One of the interesting things of this video is the Meadowlark watching the bird fly by in the background.

New Growth on Forest Floor

I hiked through the woods looking for new growth today. I found a few things to take a photo of and post.

Beaver Working on Large Cottonwoods

I found this photo taken in Jan 2004. Beaver have been working on cutting down Cottonwoods along the Missouri river.

Moss Growing because of Spring

This moss is growing where a spring trickles down a steep hillside.


Psalm 107:35
"He changes a wilderness into a pool of water. And a dry land into springs of water;"

Rock Outcroping

Hiking along a trail that cuts through a steep hillside I came across this rock outcropping. The ground went almost straight down from the top to the bottom.

I looked for signs of wildlife but didn't see any. My links show some rock outcroppings. When I run across these I am reminded of the fragile soil layer above these rocks. Most plant growth happens in the topsoil layer.

Forests on steep hills and mountains will suffer erosion when logged. Especially clear cut logging. Care needs to be taken when working in these sites. Where I am, is a park and I won't have to worry about logging.
