I came across this interesting gash in a maple tree. Some trees grow in a spiral and I am wondering if that is what this tree is doing or do we see the result of a lightning strike? At any event the tree is interesting and below I shoot up its bowl showing the massive growth.

That is odd. Was there a fairly deep cavity at location of the spiral?
