Here is an old Black walnut I have hiked by for many years. Growing where the land once was a pasture. Now the land is in rough leaf dogwood as a primary invading species.
Isaiah 45:8
"Drip down, O heavens, from above,
And let the clouds pour down righteousness:
Let the earth open up and salvation bear fruit,
And righteousness spring up with it.
I, the Lord have created it."
It is interesting to note that Walnut will probably be there long after the Dogwoods have expired. I say from it size that old tree has to be at least 300 years old, probably more like 400 years old.
ReplyDeleteThe small town where I live was built in a natural grove of Black Walnut. The phone company cut down a slender Walnut to make way for phone lines. I counted the growth rings on the tree's stump. There were 198 of them! My friend has a tree that she affectionately calls 'Fertile Myrtle' that is three times its size. It looks about the size of your Walnut.
The steadfast durable Walnut in that grove of short lived Dogwoods, rather reminds me of an uncompromising Christian well founded in the Bible out there in the world of ideas that don't promise anything permanent.
Sadly, though those Dogwoods probably make it hard for that tree to reproduce, like today's society makes it hard for the Christian to bring up Christian children.
I have measured this tree in the past but am not a good record keeper. I want to measure it again this year.
ReplyDeleteThe dogwood patch is thick with poison ivy. I also get some blackberries from this area.
I would be curious to find out the girth of that particular tree. The4 198 year old specimen here in Windom was a mere foot and a half in diameter.
